Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 29, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Restart Financial ("we", "us", "our") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. We are based in British Columbia, Canada, and serve members in Canada and the United States.
1. Information we collect
- Account information — your name and email address when you sign up.
- Onboarding & profile answers — information you provide about your situation (e.g., country, debt situation, goals).
- Financial information you enter into our tools — such as income, expenses, debts, and savings goals in the budget/cashflow and debt tools.
- Learning activity — your course progress and questions you submit to the in-app coach.
- Payment information — processed by Stripe. We receive confirmation of payment and limited details (such as the last digits of your card and billing email); we do not collect or store your full card number.
- Technical data — basic information stored in your browser (via local storage) so the site works and remembers your progress.
2. How we use your information
We use your information to provide and personalize the Service, save and restore your course progress and tool entries, process payments, respond to your questions, allow your advisor to support you (see below), improve the Service, and meet legal and security obligations.
3. Advisor access
4. Service providers we share data with
We share information only as needed with trusted providers who help us run the Service:
- Supabase — secure database and authentication (stores your account and the data above).
- Netlify — website hosting.
- Stripe — payment processing.
- EmailJS — email delivery, used when you choose to send a message that includes your information — for example, a support request to Restart Financial or a consultation request to a debt-relief partner. In those cases the details you choose to include (which may contain a summary of your budget, such as income, expenses, and debt payments) are transmitted through EmailJS to reach the recipient's inbox.
- Debt-relief partners (CreditLift in Canada; our partner firm in the US) — if you request a consultation, we pass along the budget and debt details you choose to share so they can follow up. They then handle your information under their own privacy policies.
- OpenAI — the in-app AI Money Coach is powered by OpenAI’s API. When you ask the Coach a question, a summary of the budget figures you have entered (such as your income, expense, and debt-payment totals — not individual account numbers) and the question you type are sent to OpenAI to generate the answer, which is then returned to you. Under OpenAI’s API terms, data sent to the API is not used to train or improve OpenAI’s models (we have not opted in to any data-sharing that would change this). OpenAI generates abuse-monitoring logs for API usage and retains them for up to 30 days, after which they are deleted — unless longer retention is required by law or is reasonably necessary to protect against harm. OpenAI processes this data on its own infrastructure (primarily in the United States) and may use subprocessors. You can ask us to stop processing your data with the Coach, or to delete your account and its data, at any time by emailing support@restartfinance.ca. See OpenAI’s privacy policy and API data usage policies for details.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
Some links in the Service (for example, a recommended bank account) are affiliate links: if you open an account through one, we may earn a referral fee at no cost to you. Using an affiliate link does not share your personal information with that company.
5. How your information is protected
Access to the site uses secure (HTTPS) connections, and your data is stored with access controls so that you — and, where applicable, your authorized advisor — can see it, but other members cannot. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
6. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service and meet legal obligations. You may ask us to delete your account and associated data (see below).
7. Your rights & choices
You can access and update much of your information from your account page. You may also contact us to request a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete your account. Canadian users have rights under PIPEDA, and US users may have rights under applicable state laws; we honour reasonable requests regardless of where you live.
8. Cookies & local storage
We use browser local storage (and essential cookies) to keep you signed in and to save your progress and tool entries on your device. When you sign out, your personal financial entries are cleared from that browser (they remain saved to your account and are restored when you sign back in).
The "Before & After" letter. The optional letter you can type on the Before & After page is saved only in your browser's local storage on the device you use. It is not uploaded to your Restart Financial account, is not synced to any other browser or device, and is not visible to our staff or to advisors in the advisor dashboard. It is not encrypted and is not isolated from other software on your device, so you should not type it on a shared or public device. It is deleted when you sign out, when you clear this browser's site data, or if you use a different browser or device (where it will simply not be present). Because it is stored locally rather than in your account, we cannot recover it for you if it is deleted.
9. Children
The Service is intended for adults (18+) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
10. Changes
We may update this Policy; material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
